Rigid Actors' Guild and Equity rules insist that any robot portraying a biological character must be a unique Class 1 android programmed with level 7 or higher emulation. Not only is this expensive but the first generations of Hollywood androids were a nightmare on set. Their bodies required extensive maintenance from a team of support staff and their 'human equivalent' personalities were often demanding and unreasonable.
Directors love to work with units like Ms Blunt, a third gen android who meets all the requirements but is at heart programmed as a practical no-nonsense robot girl. She has no issues with being charged or adjusted on set between takes and having her systems worked to the limits. "After all", she says, "I was built to realist the Director's vision." |
