A Manip of a [robot] displaying her Internal hardware.

Internals, in general, is a term used to describe the hardware that makes up the internal components of a fembot. This is sometimes referred to as "Mechabare" or "Mekabare". The term is a portmanteau of Mecha and Bare, literally meaning "To bare or show the mechanical". This trope can take several forms in both written and visual media.

The concept of a robot showing her internals servers a number of purposes. In fictional stories and media a robot can voluntarily expose her internals in order to prove to someone who is doubting her robotic nature. Exposed internals can also be used to reveal to a converted woman who has been programmed as a Sleeper that she is, in fact, an android. Alternatively, a converted android may intentionally expose her internals as a means of proving to another character that they are no longer a human. In these cases the exposure often times comes as a shock, though it generally turns quickly into curiosity to see more. It can also cause a converted fembot to attempt to convince another character to go through the same conversion process.

Exposed internals also feature as a climactic event in media that portrays damage and destruction. Exposed internals, in these cases, generally equates to a Malfunction in the fembot, though not always. It is not uncommon for the damage to only be to the dermal layer and simply exposing the internals without any further damage or difficulty. In these cases, the fembot will generally need to be repaired or serviced to restore her fully human appearance.

In Fiction

The robotic internals are varied in description, matching with whatever style the author sees fit or with what works with the story. They can be described as sleek and well managed, often times using similar terminology to describing a high end gaming computer, or messy and resembling a mess of cables and circuit boards. Other descriptions can include a shell between the outer layers of skin or covering and the delicate internal circuitry. Many authors describe a hard shell that needs to be removed in order to access a fembot's true internals. The descriptions of internal hardware will often times include the circuitry and wiring, the shell casing (if there is any) and the framework and skeletal structure of the robot.

Examples

  • In Korby's story The Makeover, a fembot exposes her internals to a friend as a means of convincing her to also be converted.
"Rachel, I am an RX3000 series android. My body consists of a polycarbonate fibre resin skeletal system supporting a perfectly replicated matrix of synthetic muscle fibres, within which is a core of pica-eletronic circuitry. My consciousness was transferred from my organic body, digitised, and uploaded into this android body standing before you."
Perplexed, Rachel stammered, "What are you talking about!"
A line began to grow around the perimeter of Maria's face. Within seconds it had framed the front of her visage, and slowly her hands rose up to each side of her face. As this happened there was a gentle whirr. Rachel's heart stopped as her friend removed her entire visage, leaving two rows of perfect teeth and two perfect eyeballs gazing out from a mass of packed circuitry. Maria's hands were now by her side, the right one holding the beautiful mask comprising most of her sexy face. Slowly Maria advanced towards the stunned Rachel.
"My body is completely robotic. Look at me Rachel, there's nothing to worry about, I'm still the Maria you know. I've just had the chance to be given a perfect android body - and I took it. Now I'm perfect."
Still reeling, Rachel stared at the synthetic eyeballs of her friend, amazed by the whirring servos which moved them to follow her own startled eyes. Maria's head was a mass of what looked to Rachel like the inside of her brother's most advanced computer.
As if this were insufficient a shock for Rachel, Maria now set her facial panel on the nearby table and proceeded to open her blouse and remove her bra. A stunned Rachel looked on as the android peeled off her breasts and a portion of the skin covering her belly. Underneath lay a fibrous blanket of grey muscle, much like that which Rachel recalled from her distant biology lessons - only that was red!! Soon Maria had revealed her inner most circuit bays to the now pale and dazed Rachel. The same Rachel who was also strangely excited by the sight of her partially disassembled friend.

Visual media

Visually the internal workings of a robot vary as much as the artists who make them. They can be sparse and connected only by a few bundles of wires to complicated arrays of circuit boards and thick cables. Occasionally all of the internals will be contained inside an internal casing, making the robot more modular and able to swap out large subsystems. The method of exposing the internals can be as simple as an open Access panel to Damage to the synthetic skin or outer covering. Alternatively the robot can display her internals by removing a limb, head, or face panel (sometimes referred to as a Faceoff. In doing so she exposes a certain portion of her internals. This is generally to show a connection point on the robot's body.
