A VTuber, short for "Virtual YouTuber", describes a phenomenon in which online entertainers utilize motion-capture technology and computer-generated graphics to create a virtual avatar. The trend first began in Japan under the channel Kizuna AI in 2016, though similar personas have existed since at least 2010. Currently, the phenomenon has spread on a global scale, with many major corporations and governments also using avatars designed in the female anime aesthetic.

Note that a VTuber is distinct from a Vocaloid, though the two roles can overlap.

Note that a VTuber are controlled by a real, physical human being.
