Background

In the Star Trek universe, Lt. Commander Data was a Soong-type android, created by Dr. Noonien Soong, who served as Ops Manager on the U.S.S. Enterprise-D and U.S.S. Enterprise-E. He was played by Brent Spiner.

Data was the last android created by Dr. Noonien Soong, and the first to be discovered by Starfleet and humanity as a whole. Starfleet officers found him laying inside a cave while investigating the devastation of Omicron Theta caused by the Crystalline Entity. Shortly after being activated, he decided to apply for Starfleet Academy in order to give something back for them activating him. Despite protests from a Commander Bruce Maddox, who preached that Data was not sentient, he was admitted and later graduated.

He spent several years as an Ensign and in the lower Lieutenant grades on two separate Starfleet vessels before finally joining the U.S.S. Enterprise-D as a Lieutenant Commander, Ops Manager, and Second Officer. It is on the Enterprise that he begins developing human behaviors and mannerisms, after emulating several of the crew. His first year onboard, they revisit the colony where he was built and discover the dismantled body of his brother, who reveals his name is Lore upon activation. It is quickly discovered that Lore has a streak of evil in him, as he subdues Data and pretends to be him so he can summon the Crystalline Entity again. After an aborted attempt to murder Data, Lore is beamed into space.

During his second year, Cmdr. Bruce Maddox once again tries to affirm that Data is not sentient, Captain Picard argues Data's case in front of a JAG officer and does not succeed at having Data declared legally sentient, but that he is not the property of Starfleet and should have the freedom to discover if he is sentient.

The next year, Data manages to create his own version of a Positronic brain, and eventually uses it to build his own offspring in the form of a young Human woman he names Lal. Despite his best efforts to bring her to sentience, even copying his own pathways to her own, she eventually suffers a cascade failure and goes offline.

A few months later, he encounters his father and they get to know each other for a brief time before his brother Lore kills his father.

In his seventh year, he meets his mother, Dr. Juliana Tainer. After working with her, and and accident, it is discovered his mother is an android as well, although a holographic chip in her body reveals she is a copy of the real Juliana O'Donnell, and is not aware of her nature. Data struggles to decide whether he should let her know so he can have someone to relate to, or let her remain ignorant and thus keep her human. He finally decides telling her would strip her of everything he himself has spent his life striving for. They depart on good terms.

A year later, he determines he has reached a functional impasse and installs the emotion chip in himself. The emotions turn out to be too much for him to handle, and he malfunctions; the chip is fused into his brain. Finally, he is able to handle his new emotions. A few years later during the Borg attack on Earth, he is shown to have the ability to shut the chip off when he chooses, and two years after that during the Ba'ku insurrection, he is shown to have the ability to remove the chip entirely.

Three years later, Data sacrifices himself to save the Enterprise-E from a Thaleron radiation pulse, destroying the Reman warbird Scimitar, and himself.
