It was the kind of night where you either decided to stay home or you went out with someone else just so your own footsteps weren’t the only sounds breaking the silence. “Fall” stood like beast waiting to devour its next meal, with large dark gothic columns that supported an upper balcony tripped with wrought iron. The balcony was unused tonight, but at each corner of it sat iron bowls, filled with dancing fire as if someone had poured some kind of flame spirit into them. The gas lines cleverly hidden inside the wrought iron post it was welded to. As a result of both the increasing technology and the destabilization of nations around the world, most nations dumped a massive amount of funding into research and development. The culmination of which was the introduction of realistic humanoid robots, most of which were initially used for military purposes but soon crept into civilian use with time. The layers of grime and build up in the kitchen were like rings on a tree, if someone had chosen to scrub them all the history they would have uncovered might be considered a scientific discovery. The old grease fryer, the gas range and the massive grill were all old, newer than some of the oddly stained tiles or the wash basin, but still ancient. It was the old time feel that many claimed gave the food here its trademark charm and added a little something to the food. The whole place had become a staple in the neighborhoods and there were days when the regular customers made up the vast majority of the patrons rather than newcomers. The staff were always happy to see their favorites come through the door. 	The AEG348 orbital quick response station floated lazily through the thermosphere of a planet that didn’t yet have a name, at least not a proper name, it was 34-Agare-b in the records held back on earth. Most people just called it Dustball. Dustball because of the large swathes of land still covered in brown loose dirt which made it prone to dust storms. Terraforming was a very real, but very time intensive process that required years of dedication and work by large groups of people willing to till the earth and plant seeds that they would never get a chance to enjoy. The problem was that there was always some kind of rebellion, or uprising, or some group of people who wanted to tear down what was being built. Any number of reasons had cropped up over the years, from people claiming that Earth was the one true planet and all others were somehow less than human, others claimed that we were trampling over the evolutionary potential of another planet and therefore were committing genocide. No matter the reason, they all ended in violence and destruction. The mechanisms inside of her head that controlled the movements of what appeared to be pale blue and very realistic human eyes were whisper quiet. 	Heather didn’t have to wait very long though, the small exoplanet at the far reaches of explored space was discovered and she was loaded into a supply rocket, bound for the space station that had recently been constructed in orbit. Like her induction into the program she was treated, for lack of a better word, like an object. Heather’s storage container was hauled in by a crew of humans, slotted into the storage bays, and then left there. One of them signed off on the delivery and then simply left her there. Nestled among three other storage containers holding similar android volunteers, she waited until the command came through to activate and begin work. Her eyes opened smoothly and darted around her surroundings. Everything was so solidly black that the complex artificial mind she had installed wondered for a moment if her optical systems were malfunctioning. Just as she was about to open a service ticket to the I.T. department there was a small hissing sound, as if some great seal had been broken. Appearing to her left was a thin sliver of light that forced her to squint as the irises in her artificial eyes quickly adjusted to the sudden change in brightness. The lid to her storage container continued to open until she was able to see all her surroundings. 	Claire strode towards the door to her apartment, an armload of papers and documents cradled in one arm and a briefcase in the other. Every step was punctuated by the rhythmic clicking of her high heeled shoes impacting the smooth marble flooring in the hallway. She had arrived at her front door, a set of heavy double frames, made of some of the finest mahogany. Claire turned sideways and stuck out an elbow before squatting down a bit. Her elbow caught the door handle just enough to release the latch and allow her to kick in the door with the toe of her shoe. 	The hot early summer air wrapped the entire night in a sort of thick and unpleasant atmosphere. Inside the massive estate of one Francis Wayland the air was cool, crisp, and almost sweet. It was also silent and unoccupied, or at least most assumed it was. The silence was broken by the sharp click of heels as they impacted the highly polished tile flooring in the hallway on the top level of the manor house. The strides were far apart, indicating long legs, and while the clicking was present, they were softened, as if someone was attempting to the best of their ability to muffle the sounds. A delicate and feminine hand gently turned the door handle leading into Francis’s study, pushing it inward before a lithe form stepped into the room, her sharp chury body silhouetted by the ambient moonlight streaming in through the floor to ceiling windows. Her legs were indeed long, the high heels added to the perceived length as well. Even shrouded in the moonlight one could tell that her legs were trim and lithe, lacking any apparent excess. Her hips were just wide enough to connect the legs to the pelvis before her body dove sharply inward. To say she had an hourglass figure was something of an exaggeration. The somewhat limited amount of space was occupied by a two person bed, adorned with cheap but clean sheets and blankets. 	There had been a lot of discussion about G2. Debate would be a better term, but they were going nowhere. Still a valuable and, if the committee was being honest, a mostly unstoppable part of their crime deterrent force. Discussions came down to two topics in particular. Was there any merit in trying to upgrade her to work a little more proactively on the streets, instead of taking a passive and more investigative stance. Carla snorted at the childishly bad special effects and even worse plot, but it was enjoyable none-the-less. Brainless fun could sometimes be the best fun. She tucked a strand of her auburn hair behind her ear and let out a sigh and clicked off the TV. She tossed the remote aside and pulled her hair into a pony tail and bound it in place with the scrunchy that she had on her wrist.		Carla sat on her couch, more accurately she loafed on her couch. 	A small crowd had gathered in the backyard of a quint suburban house, it was close to the end of the school year and the sun was high. The air was filled with a chorus of voices singing “happy birthday” as the crowd gathered around a petite girl, beaming with happiness and a small dose of embarrassment. Riley had just turned eighteen and the gathering of friends at her parents' house had been the highlight of her weekend. Most of the group of friends were clad in bikinis, swim trunks, and bathing suits and many were still dripping wet from swimming in the pool nestled in the grass behind the grouping.  Much of humanity's future is like it's past. In the late twenty first century technology had advanced far enough to allow for artificial intelligence to be cultivated, not into the war machines so many feared but into something more. Almost a new life form. Along with the controversy of IF it was a new form of life or not came bigots. Humans who felt they were a superior life form, that the robots we created should be our subjects and servants rather than companions and friends. As so, like all of humanities past, violence broke out. There were protests, demonstrations and eventually laws. In time the world came to recognize robots as their own creatures and granted them rights. The hatred boiled, them simmered and eventually diminished to a dull ache in the past.

Robotics had progressed far enough in recent years that many manufacturers were able to produce units that looked indistinguishable from the average human. In one such factory that had been constructed at the city limits of a mid sized city in Oregon, mechanical arms and automated delivery bins carted and assembled pieces of what would eventually be a woman to and fro. Everything began with what would eventually be her torso, which an off-white plastic encased robot arm clamped onto and hauled out of a bin of identical torso frames. It was gently curved and filled with pre-drilled holes for any number of components to attach to it. The arm swung it in an all too precise arc and gently dropped it into the caddy sitting on a conveyor belt. A number of additional arms descended onto the frame and began to snap small plastic trays and mounting points inside of the framework, then the belt moved, carrying the torso off to the next station while the robotic arms pulled another torso from the bin and began the process all over again.
